The work
Every mark is his. The arrangement is yours.
AUDIENCE responds to a sitting with an image, a title and a question. Its material comes from Steve Baylis’s paintings; its arrangements are made digitally.
If you speak, the sound of your voice and selected subject words shape the work. If you type, the shape of your answers guides the arrangement and selected words inform its title and question. The marks arrive in eleven layers, in a fixed order.
The title and question come from an authored vocabulary. They are part of the artwork, not a diagnosis or an account of who you are.
If you choose images, ten sets of four generated illustrations guide the arrangement. The microphone stays off, and your selections stay on your device. You can pass on any question.
Digital arrangements can recur. Choosing silence produces a shared composition, with no microphone and no answers sent.

Works from the sitting
Earlier demonstration works, made from test inputs. These use the previous nine-layer edition; new online sittings use eleven layers.
No person sat for these five works. Each is credited to Steve Baylis as a demonstration sitting. Your work can carry your name alongside his.

Experience AUDIENCE
This preview lets you experience the sitting before purchases open. No payment is taken, and no framed work is ordered.
AUDIENCE is currently in English. Speaking and typing follow five questions. Speaking takes several minutes; typing is at your own pace. Silence is a shorter route, with no questions to answer.
If you speak or type, your answers are processed on the AUDIENCE server. Audio is released after processing, and the full answer text is discarded after subject words have been selected. A short record of those words and summary information remains under your work’s code.

The sequence
From a sitting to a work
Make space
Choose speaking, typing or silence. Add the name you want on the artwork, or leave it unnamed.
Take your turn
Answer the five questions out loud or in writing. You can finish a spoken answer early. If you choose silence, there is simply a short pause.
Watch the marks arrive
Eleven layers build the image. Each is introduced with a note about its place in the work and its source where recorded.
Spend a moment with it
The finished work holds, then its title and question appear. Explore the layer record and download your copy.
